BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) had an employee garden that donated 72 pounds of fresh food last year to those in need. But they wanted to do more. They wanted more of their 5,000 employees to be able to participate, and they wanted to increase their yield.
So when the garden’s manager, Eliza Bordley of Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, was offered a rent-free half-acre of garden-ready land, sparks flew! Reinvestment Partners, a local community development non-profit, owns the East Geer Street lot and the Bull City Cool Food Hub where the garden’s fruits are stored.
Now officially the Geer Street Learning Garden (GSLG), BCBSNC hopes to donate over 500 pounds of fresh food this year alone. Read their article “Cultivating Minds at the Geer Street Learning Garden” and get a glimpse at the great programs that GSLG hosts… and maybe even get involved!
