“Where’s the bathroom?” It’s one of the most important questions wherever you are. Here at 902 N Mangum we answer the question like this:
Go in the front doors and turn right. Step into the display window and follow it to the left for 10 feet. The bathroom’s on the left.
What a surprise it was for us to find this preserved 1950s gas station bathroom! While up in the soffit, we noticed a formerly-exterior transom window. Below that, and behind the display window’s backing, a small door leading to this unexpected portal to the past.
When the aluminum siding company – former occupants – built out display windows as part of their exterior “makeover,” they enclosed the bathroom. It used to be accessible from the outside, and probably served gas station customers in the ’50s.
As you can see, the bathroom has dark periwinkle tiles on the walls, including around the mirror. The tiles are metal and appear to be spray-painted.
Not pictured here is the toilet to the left. It’s a pull-flush design where the bowl is separate form the tank, which is mounted on the wall.
Unaware this bathroom existed, it wasn’t included in our original architectural plans. We will, however, be changing those plans now!

I am so glad you saved the tile in this restroom. I was so surprised when I used ‘the facilities’ last week…it was a little retreat and totally unexpected. Seriously – it is like out of a magazine lovely restroom! Thank you to all the folks who have poured themselves into this excellent restoration – I hope you are happy because I think it is the best thing I have seen in a long time! I cannot wait to hear more news about your tenants and how you all help move fresh local food into Durham!

Thanks, Kat! The bathroom is really a work of art… from the vintage tiles and bead board to the modern, yet period appropriate, transom glass and pendant light fixtures. And we’re glad you agree! 🙂
