When Inter-Faith Food Shuttle joined the Bull City Cool Food Hub last summer, they did more than re-locate their Durham-based programs to Geer Street. They were prepared to grow their programs and capacity through the food hub.
Part of that growth included plans to transform the vacant lot next to Reinvestment Partners, and across from Bull City Cool, into a flourishing urban garden. Twelve months later, they’ve done just that… and more!
Initially dubbed the Bull City Cool Garden, IFFS’s “Geer Street Learning Garden” (GSLG) has become an astounding resource to the community with the support of several local businesses and nonprofits, many of whom made appearances at the garden’s May 31st grand opening and dedication.
One of those supporters is Bee Downtown, “a company focused on social and environmental responsibility” with the goal of building “healthy, sustainable, honey bee communities around the world.” And they have chosen GSLG as a site for two of their hives!
Read Bee Downtown’s article about GSLG, from the perspective of the bees: A Collaborative Mission to Provide Food For a Community and the Bees. It provides unique insight into the company’s mission and why they took interest in IFFS’ humble urban garden on Geer Street in Durham.

Wish I was able to get my bees to stay. Each year they don’t seem happy and leave.

Hi! You could contact Bee Downtown (http://beedowntown.org/) to see if they provide tips on how to keep bees happy. Good luck!
