Waaay back when we bought 902 N Mangum St in March 2014 – AKA the distant past – we decided to preserve its historical elements while simultaneously transforming it into a modern facility. More specifically, we said we’d keep the handsome features and oust the homely ones. And I don’t think there’s anything less tasteful or more unattractive than the oppression of one people by another.
How does this relate to rehab? Here’s what happened in the process of demolition…
We discovered the original gas station bathroom that bore witness to our city’s history of racial segregation. Equipped with two now-dilapidated doors, one door faintly read “COLORED” while the other read “WHITE.” History, take a bow… This was one of your worst moments.
Post-renovation, we’re happy to report that same bathroom is now unisex and ADA compliant, accessible by all. While we are using a historical door, we added 1.5” of trim to both sides of the door to make a 32” clearance and meet ADA standards.
