With our City of Durham demolition permit approved and in-hand, this rehabilitation project is underway.
We started by removing all superfluous interior non-load-bearing walls. (Try to say that five times fast!) The kitchen is now gone. The bathrooms – gone. Offices – sayonara. Hair salon – adios.
Next, we hired a local business, Synergy Enterprises, to perform the demolition and painting. The dingy off-white and burgundy walls were painted a fresh bright white. The cement floor sealed with epoxy paint to meet Durham County’s health code.
An electrical inspection by Durham’s City–County Inspections Department was required to restore power to the property. King Brothers Electric of Durham serviced the seriously antiquated electrical system, and we subsequently passed inspection.
During the electrical work, we salvaged overhead lamp globes from the 1970’s. We hope to use these in conjunction with LED bulbs to illuminate the renovated warehouse.
Now clean, spacious, and powered, the warehouse is almost ready for our local-food partners to move in. Next on the docket is finishing procurement of our first walk-in cooler.
